Nursery and Primary Education

Mission Statement

To monitor, facilitate, advise on and promote best practices in the effective management and administration of schools, to evaluate management and administrative practices and to enhance the educational leadership capacity of school managers in an era of reform and change.

STAFF

The Section is staffed by the following persons:

  • 1 Senior Education Officer,
  • 4 Education Officers,
  • 1 Executive Officer,
  • 1 Administrative Officer II,
  • 1 Clerk-Typist.
 

The Nursery and Primary Schools (N&P Section’s) main task is to facilitate the efficient monitoring and regulating of schools to ensure their effective functioning.

The Nursery and Primary Schools (N & P) Section has responsibility for:

  • Monitoring and evaluating management and teaching processes in schools
  • Recruiting, orienting, and assigning teachers to schools
  • Providing professional development for principals and teachers
  • Orienting, assigning and assessing school administrators
  • Providing professional development for school administrators
  • Redeploying teachers across the system for a better skills mix
  • Processing applications for home-schooling
  • Registering and re-registering private nursery, primary and special educational institutions
  • Preparing the Department of Emergency Management’s (DEM) booklet of emergency
  • Shelters and for monitoring shelters in the event of an emergency
  • Training shelter managers
  • Promoting the Before and After School Care Programme in schools
  • The Parent Volunteer Support Programme in schools
  • The Schools’ Positive Behaviour Management Programme (SPBMP)
  • Processing applications for student visas for non-nationals
  • Coordinating activities relative to the relocation, official opening and re-naming of schools
  • Processing claims for compensation
  • Processing applications for use of school buildings
  • Approving school tours/visits
  • The pre-primary expansion programme which provides school places for 3-year-olds
  • Procuring furniture and equipment for public nursery, primary and special needs schools
  • Procuring educational resources for Early Childhood Education
  • Placing nursery/primary age students who did not receive initial placement in schools

School Statistics

Currently, there are sixty-eight (68) public primary schools, twelve (12) public nursery schools, one (1) Infants School and four (4) public special schools. Special Needs Education is also provided at four (4) Special Units within the primary schools.

Additionally, thirty-six (36) private nursery and primary schools are registered with the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training.
